USDOT Roadway Safety Innovation Expo Recap: AIWaysion Showcases Edge AI Intersection Safety
Updated: Oct 5
Happy October! 🍂
As we look back on a busy September, we wanted to highlight one of the month’s memorable moments: AIWaysion exhibiting at the U.S. Department of Transportation Roadway Safety Innovation Expo in Washington, D.C.
AIWaysion showcased its Edge AI safety technology at the U.S. Department of Transportation's inaugural Roadway Safety Innovation Expo, held September 18, 2026, at USDOT headquarters in Washington, DC. The event brought together roughly 40 of the latest life-saving transportation technologies and innovations, and gave the AIWaysion team the chance to connect with collaborators, customers, and partners across the transportation community.
At its indoor booth, AIWaysion demonstrated a new dual RGB + thermal Edge AI system, combining multimodal sensing with on-device AI for robust detection under challenging lighting and environmental conditions. Visitors were able to step into a demonstration crosswalk to see pedestrian detection, trajectory prediction, conflict and near-miss analysis, and real-time traffic signal safety intervention in action, alongside a live intersection digital twin connecting real-time sensing with actionable safety insights.
AIWaysion technology was also live at the Intelligent Transportation Society of America booth, where the company's field-deployed MUST (Mobile Unit for Sensing Traffic) Edge AI system was integrated with project partner AV's LINX™ connected vehicle platform. The integration demonstrated how real-time multimodal detection from roadside AI can support connected roadway monitoring and safety alerts.
That demonstration also served as a preview of the upcoming M Street Road Safety Technology Pilot, located right outside USDOT headquarters, which will connect roadside Edge AI and V2X technology to turn what infrastructure sees into real-time, actionable safety information.
AIWaysion's technologies have been developed and advanced with support from the USDOT Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program through USDOT Research and Technology and the U.S. DOT Volpe Center, helping move deep transportation research from R&D into real-world deployment.
Two Edge AI configurations, one goal: moving transportation infrastructure from passive monitoring toward proactive, real-time safety. AIWaysion thanks the USDOT and everyone who stopped by the booth, shared ideas, and made the event a great experience — and looks forward to sharing more as the M Street deployment moves forward.
