AIWaysion Featured in Cities Today for Washington, DC Autonomous Vehicle Monitoring
AIWaysion was recently featured in Cities Today for its upcoming deployment with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to independently monitor autonomous vehicle operations in Washington, DC. The article, “Washington DC deploys AI to monitor AVs,” highlights AIWaysion’s selection for the Autonomous Vehicle Observation (AVO) Zone Challenge and its role in helping DDOT better understand how autonomous vehicles behave alongside human-driven traffic.
Beginning in January 2027, AIWaysion will work with Parsons Corporation to deploy its Mobile Unit for Sensing Traffic (MUST) at two busy Washington, DC intersections. Using Edge AI and computer vision, the system will detect and track autonomous vehicles, generate detailed trajectory data, and analyze vehicle movements and interactions within mixed urban traffic.
In the Cities Today feature, DDOT Autonomous Vehicles Programme Manager Stephanie Dock discussed AIWaysion’s selection following an evaluation by a panel of internal and external experts. Dock highlighted AIWaysion’s commercially deployed sensing technology, approach to developing autonomous vehicle detection capabilities, plans for video anonymization, and responsiveness to DDOT’s infrastructure and public data-sharing requirements.
The pilot will support DDOT’s efforts to develop an independent, data-driven understanding of autonomous vehicle behavior, including comparisons between AVs and human-driven vehicles and how AVs interact with the broader transportation environment. The project will also help inform conversations with the Washington, DC community about autonomous vehicles operating in public spaces.
